The majority of this past summer was spent on an art project, Soundwaves. It was created for Artprize and displayed at Grand Rapids Brewing Company. The goal was to show the connection between the surfboard and the guitar, as if one grew up to become a musical instrument, and the other surf craft.
As the thermometer drops below zero, I find myself daydreaming of sessions in the summer. Equipped with the absolute minimum and being in the water by first light seems so foreign. The deepest part of winter brings me so close to the height of summer.
Welcome to the world of surfboard building and surfing in the Great Lakes. Though our waves can't compete with most major breaks in the world, we do get plenty of decent surf, without the crowds. Some people compare surfing on the lakes to what surfing used to be on the ocean in the 60's and 70's. We are still trying to figure out what type of boards work well in fresh water, there are many undiscovered surf spots, and the community here is among the most welcoming. So here we are, enjoy.
