Soundwaves

Soundwaves - An ArtPrize 2015 Installation from Antix Creative on Vimeo.

The majority of this past summer was spent on an art project, Soundwaves. It was created for Artprize and displayed at Grand Rapids Brewing Company. The goal was to show the connection between the surfboard and the guitar, as if one grew up to become a musical instrument, and the other surf craft. https://vimeo.com/antixcreative/soundwaves

Sunset meets the Storm

Holland State Park August 2nd, 2015 two fronts collide. Tornadoes touched down up north while to the south beach goers enjoyed the sunset.

A collaboration between Sinuous Guitars and Burly Surfboards took flight. Interesting things to come.

Fugazi - Arpeggiator Demo

This is an old gem, forgot how much I missed Fugazi. At the same time, I am back in the shaping bay and almost forgot how much I missed shaping a foam blank. Cheers to both!

One Cold Drink

As the thermometer drops below zero, I find myself daydreaming of sessions in the summer. Equipped with the absolute minimum and being in the water by first light seems so foreign. The deepest part of winter brings me so close to the height of summer.

Sticks and Stones...

The Wedge has been known to break the more crucial bones of a person's body.  This is a beautiful video illustrating it's power.

A Grainy Glimpse

This is a pixelated version of what South Haven looked like on Monday morning.  It was shifty like she often can be, but super fun.  Here's Tim Folkert finding a shoulder to lean on after his morning coffee.

Waves in Black and White

Interpol - All The Rage Back Home

Drink Coffee, Drink Beer, Go Surfing (maybe not in that order)

Colectivo Coffee and Lakefront Brewery just received their personal plank walking, nose riding, surf anything longboard.  Neither will be owned by the company, but donated to the Surfrider Foundation, and auctioned off at an event in Milwaukee on August 23rd.

The Blank Slate

Painters have an empty canvas, writers have the unwritten page, and sculptures have a block of clay.  Shapers, however, have the untouched blank.  Inside of it rests a surfboard waiting to be used, but the excess material must be removed, refined, then made more permanent with a resin shell.  The process is called deductive sculpture, where material must be subtracted to create a final piece.  This is the exhilarating moment, seeing the crude outline of a surfboard sitting on the stand patiently waiting to become something else.

Jack Frost

Shaping in sub-freezing temperatures is painful, but starring at a frozen lake that has no intention of thawing soon hurts worse.  6'2" long and 22.5" wide, it's a mix of a thruster and a fish.  I was introduced to a similar shape in Florida and it was a true quiver killer.

Old Dutch finds an Empty Pocket

Rusty is in the curl with a Burly Old Dutch he won from Lakefront Brewery this summer.  I have heard about this board ripping it up in Shelter Bay and now here in Sheboygan, WI.  It's about 15 degrees outside, but there is something about this open shoulder that warms my heart.

Draw a Line (finished board)

Finished board, ready for waves.  I have no idea who Steve is, but apparently he isn't a very likeable guy.  Some bum wrote that on the outside of my studio with toothpaste.

Draw a Line (part 2)

As a surfboard carves the face of a wave, it is often referred to as "drawing a line."  That phrase was the inspiration for this design.  The combination of uniform pinlines, and scribbley sketch lines embody the technical and free spirited style of this classically shaped 10'1" nose riding longboard.
